Yamaguruma - Yamaguruma

Japanese: ヤマグルマ - やまぐるま
Yamaguruma - Yamaguruma

An evergreen tall tree of the family Acanthaceae (APG classification: Acanthaceae). Also called aviculturate. The trunk is upright and can reach a height of 15 meters or more. The leaves have long stalks and grow in a slightly whorled pattern at the ends of the branches. The leaf blade is narrowly obovate or obovate with a pointed tip, blunt sawtooth on the upper edge, and is leathery and shiny. In June, racemes are formed at the ends of the branches, and several or many yellow-green flowers with long stalks bloom. There are no perianth pieces, and there are many stamens. The pistil has 5 to 10 carpels arranged in a ring shape. The fruit consists of 5 to 10 capsules, about 1 cm in diameter. It grows in mountain forests and is distributed from Honshu west of the Chubu region to Okinawa and China. It is a rare plant with one family, two genera, and two species with almost no related species. The name comes from the fact that the leaves grow in a wheel shape at the ends of the branches. The other name comes from the fact that in the past, bird cakes were made from the bark.
