...As an internal commandment of the religious order, it is binding on the members of the order prior to general laws and moral laws, and is the basic condition for salvation. In early Buddhism, it was common to distinguish between precepts (śīla) and vinaya (vinaya), with vinaya meaning the rules of the religious order, and referring to the 250 prohibitions for male monks and 348 for nuns. After the death of Buddha, the order was codified as a Vinaya, separate from the sutras.
