Praia - Praia (English spelling)

The capital of Cape Verde, an island nation in the Atlantic Ocean, 500 km west of Senegal, West Africa. It is located on the southeast coast of the country's largest island, São Tiago. It has a population of 94,757 (2000). The city receives little rain, with an average annual rainfall of 270 mm, due to the influence of the Canary Current and winds from the Sahara Desert. During the age of sailing ships, it flourished as an intercontinental transit port, but today it is an export port for coffee, sugar, and bananas, and a fishing port. Tourism development is planned.

西アフリカ、セネガルの西500キロメートルの大西洋上にある島国カーボベルデの首都。同国最大の島サン・ティアゴ島南東岸にある。人口9万4757（2000）。カナリア海流とサハラ砂漠からの風の影響で雨が少なく、年降水量は270ミリメートルである。帆船時代は大陸間の中継港として栄えたが、現在はコーヒー、砂糖、バナナの輸出港および漁港である。観光開発が計画されている。
