Bergonzi, Carlo

Italian tenor. He studied at the Parma Conservatory. During World War II, he was captured by the German army for his anti-Nazi activities, but was fortunately released and made his debut as an opera singer after the war (his debut was in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" in 1948). He sang as a baritone for a while, but noticed a change in the quality of his voice and switched to tenor. He made his debut again in 1951. He became active internationally, entertaining audiences around the country with his beautiful bel canto voice. In 1967, he came to Japan for the first time as a member of the Italian Opera Company.

イタリアのテノール歌手。パルマ音楽院で学ぶ。第2次大戦中，反ナチス活動を行ってドイツ軍に捕らえられたが，幸運にも釈放され，終戦後オペラ歌手としてデビュー(初舞台は1948年ロッシーニの《セビリャの理髪師》)。しばらくバリトン歌手として歌っていたが，声質の変化に気づいてテノールに転向。51年再デビュー。国際的に活躍するようになり，各地の聴衆にベル･カントの美声を堪能させた。67年イタリア歌劇団の一員として初来日。
