Sankyoronkou (English: Three Teachings Discussion)

Japanese: 三教論衡 - さんきょうろんこう（英語表記）Sān jiào lùn héng

A dispute over doctrine or rituals that took place in China between the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. The Disputes of the Three Religions, in which representatives of the three religions would debate each other, especially in front of the emperor, began under Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou Dynasty (reigned 560-578) and continued into the Tang Dynasty. During the Tang Dynasty, they were held under nine emperors since the time of Emperor Gaozu, but as the trend toward harmony between the three religions grew stronger, they became ritualized. Bai Juyi, who participated as a representative of Confucianism during the reign of Emperor Wenzong, wrote down the Disputes of the Three Religions. [Tonbo Mamoru]

中国で儒教と仏教と道教の三教の間で争われた教義あるいは儀礼に関する論争のこと。とくに皇帝の目前で，三教の代表者が互いに論難し合う三教論衡は，北周の武帝(在位560‐578)のときに始まり，唐代にうけつがれた。唐代では高祖のとき以来，9帝のもとで挙行されたが，三教調和の指向が強くなるにつれて儀式化した。文宗のとき儒教を代表して参加した白居易は〈三教論衡〉を書き残した。【礪波護】
