A former town in Sakai County in northern Fukui Prefecture along the Hokuriku Main Line and Echizen Railway. Located in the center of the Fukui Plain, it developed as a town for silk and rayon weaving industries from the mid-Meiji period in addition to rice cultivation. Many people commute to Fukui City. Fukui Airport is located in the north. In March 2006, it merged with Mikuni Town, Maruoka Town, and Sakai Town in Sakai County to become a city, Sakai City. 24.43 km2 . Population 23,949 (2003). 福井県北部,北陸本線,えちぜん鉄道に沿う坂井郡の旧町。福井平野の中央にあり,米作のほか,明治中期から絹・人絹織物工業の町として発展。福井市への通勤者も多い。北部には福井空港がある。2006年3月,坂井郡三国町,丸岡町,坂井町と合併し市制,坂井市となる。24.43km2。2万3949人(2003)。
