Christian Archaeology

Archaeology is a field of study that seeks to shed light on Christian culture through relics and ruins. It can be from either the Middle Ages or modern times, but since its founder, Italian GB Rossi (1822-94), the field has focused on ancient times. Research and investigation is most active in Italy, which has many catacombs and other sites, and the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology, Commissione Pontificia di Archeologia Sacra (established in 1851), is based in Rome and plays a central role in research in this field.

遺物・遺跡によってキリスト教文化を明らかにする学問をいう。対象とする時代は中世でも近代でも差し支えはないが、この学問の創始者のイタリアのロッシG. B. Rossi（1822―94）以来、古代に重点が置かれている。研究、調査は、カタコンベなどの多いイタリアがもっとも盛んで、ローマには教皇庁聖考古学委員会Commissione Pontificia di Archeologia Sacra（1851創立）があり、この方面での研究に中心的な役割を演じている。
