Bush lice - Bush lice

A biennial plant of the Umbelliferae family (APG classification: Umbelliferae). The stems are 30-70 cm tall. The leaves are bipinnately compound, trifoliate, and roughly triangular (see the "compound leaf" section for leaf morphology). From May to July, the plant produces umbels and white flowers. The fruits are ovate, about 3 mm long, densely covered with thorns, and attach to clothing like lice, hence the name. They commonly grow in the shade of trees in the mountains and fields, native to Japan and Eurasia, and have become naturalized in South Asia and North America. The T. scabra (Thunb.) DC., a closely related species, has erect stems and a purple tinge. The leaves are similar to those of the T. scabra but are large, and the fruits are larger, about 5 mm long. There are 15 species of the T. scabra genus, distributed from the Mediterranean region to Asia.

セリ科（APG分類：セリ科）の越年草。茎は高さ30～70センチメートル。葉は2回3出の羽状複葉、概形は三角形である（葉の形態については「複葉」の項を参照）。5～7月、散形花序をつくり、白色花を開く。果実は卵形で長さ約3ミリメートル、刺(とげ)を密生し、シラミのように衣服に付着するのでこの名がある。山野の木陰に普通に生え、日本およびユーラシアに自生し、南アジアと北アメリカに帰化している。オヤブジラミT. scabra (Thunb.) DC.は近縁の別種で、茎は直立し紫色を帯びる。葉はヤブジラミに似ているが大きく、果実は長さ約5ミリメートルとより大きい。ヤブジラミ属は地中海地方からアジアに15種分布する。
