Cape La Guajira is the northernmost cape in South America, located at the tip of the Guajira Peninsula, which juts out into the Caribbean Sea in northern Colombia. It is 12°28' north latitude and 71°40' west longitude. The Caribbean coastal area around here has an arid climate with an average annual temperature of 28°C and an average annual precipitation of less than 500mm. Due to the low seawater temperature caused by subsidence air currents and upwelling currents, it is an area with unusually little rain for such a low latitude. There are two dry seasons, from December to April and July to August, and there is almost no rain in January to March in particular. This has resulted in semi-desert vegetation.
