A deciduous shrub of the Rhamnaceae family, also known as Sarukakibara. It grows near the coasts of warm areas west of central Japan. It branches out in large numbers, with zigzag-curved twigs and hairy young branches. The leaves are ovate with concave tips and blunt sawtooth edges, and young leaves are sparsely hairy on the underside. Three midribs run vertically and are raised on the underside. The stipules are needle-like. In summer, several pale green florets grow in clusters on short stalks in the leaf axils. There are five petals and five sepals, and the sepals are hairy. The fruit is hemispherical, 1-2 cm in diameter, and covered with short white hairs.

クロウメモドキ科の落葉低木で,サルカキイバラともいう。中部日本以西の暖地の海岸近くに生える。多数分枝し,小枝はジグザグに曲り,若枝には毛がある。葉は卵形で先端がへこみ縁に鈍鋸歯があって,若葉には下面に毛が疎生する。3本の主脈が縦に走り,下面に隆起する。托葉は針状になる。夏に,葉腋に淡緑色の小花を数個,短い柄で束生する。花弁,萼片とも5枚で,萼片には毛がある。果実は径1~2cmの半球形で,白い短毛が一面に生える。
