Around 1490 - 1542
Italian painter. His real name was Giovanni Luteri. Like Correggio and Lotto, he showed innovation that broke with the Renaissance tradition, but he had no successors and remained a regional art. Born as the son of a member of the Este family in Mantua, he served the court of Ferrara, which was related to the Este family, and settled there from 1514. Influenced by the style of pastoral painting by Giorgione, he inherited the erudite tradition of the 15th century Ferrara school. His style is characterized by vivid colors, natural scenes full of poetic emotion, and mysterious and dreamy themes containing many allegories.
