…English words like event and matter, German words like Sache and Sachverhalt, and French words like chose and fait are sometimes translated as 事, but the original idea is different from them. There are some academic concepts similar to 事 in the late Neo-Kantian school, the early phenomenological school, and the logical analysis school, such as 事, which was introduced as an academic concept by Meinong of the Graz school in his theory of higher objects, but even these are quite far removed from 事. The original meaning of the Chinese character 事 was 記士 (record keeper), and 事 in Chinese translations of Buddhist scriptures is the opposite concept to 理 (reason), so 事 in the everyday Chinese concept and 事 in Buddhist philosophy are also different from 事 in the everyday Japanese consciousness. …
