Mutsu Story - Mutsuwaki

A Chinese military chronicle from the late Heian period. It was written around 1062 (Kōhei 5). It is a battle chronicle that describes the whole story of the so-called Zenkunen War, in which Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and Yoshiie attacked Abe no Yoritoki and his son, a powerful lord in Oshu. From the text at the end of the volume, it seems that shortly after the pacification, an official in Kyoto combined various oral tales with the official document, and it is of great value as a document. The text is arranged in couplets sprinkled with classical phrases, and Chinese historical events are quoted, with the influence of the "Book of Han" being particularly notable. The author always takes the position of affirming and praising the actions of the government army, so it lacks the appeal of the "Shomonki." However, it is filled with moving scenes and brilliant individual achievements. It depicts the master-servant relationships and ethical values ​​of the newly emerging samurai, making it a valuable work when considering the development of later military tales.

平安後期の漢文軍記。1062年（康平5）ごろ成るか。源頼義(よりよし)・義家(よしいえ)が奥州の豪族安倍頼時(あべのよりとき)父子を征討したいわゆる前九年(ぜんくねん)の役(えき)の一部始終を書いた合戦記である。巻末の文章から、平定後まもなく在京の官人が公式の文書に種々の口誦(こうしょう)の説話をあわせて書いたと思われるが、資料的価値は高い。文章は古典の詞句をちりばめた対句で整斉され、中国の故事が引用されているが、ことに『漢書(かんじょ)』の影響が著しい。作者の立場はつねに官軍の行為を肯定賛美しているので、『将門記(しょうもんき)』のような魅力に乏しい。しかし随所に感動的場面や個人の華々しい活躍が記される。新しく台頭してきた武士の主従関係や倫理観が打ち出されていて、後世の軍記物語への展開を考察するうえで貴重である。
