Yanagidaru - Willow barrel

Japanese:
Yanagidaru - Willow barrel
A collection of senryu-style mad poems from the Edo period. Also known as Heifu Ryutaru. The first volume was published in 1765 (Meiwa 2) edited by Goryoken Kayu, and was so well received that it continued to be published. By 1791 (Kansei 3), 24 volumes had been published, excluding the opening lines of the first generation senryu. After that, the second generation senryu commentary had published 70 volumes, the fourth generation senryu had published 110 volumes, and the fifth generation had published 167 volumes (in 1840 (Tenpo 11)), before the publication ceased. It was later renamed Shinpen Ryutaru, and 40 volumes had been published by 1850 (Kaei 3). As the poem "Are the opening verses of this day no substitute for slanderous humor?" (2 pieces) states, rather than simply being a miscellaneous haiku opening verse, he aimed to create a work that emphasized the rhythm of haiku. He carried this out up to about 10 pieces, but gradually the tendency towards playing with ideas became stronger.
