Akatetsu - Akatetsu

An evergreen tall tree of the Sapotaceae family (APG classification: Sapotaceae). It is also called kurotezushi because its bark is dark brown and secretes resin. The leaves are alternate, elliptical or obovate, 5-10 cm long, entire, and thick, leathery with many brown hairs on the underside. Small white flowers bloom in June, and the fruits are elliptical and shiny, ripening to a dark purple color in September. They are found in coastal forests in the Ogasawara Islands, Okinawa, Tokara Islands, southern China, India, Malaysia, Micronesia, and Polynesia, and are planted as windbreaks and tidebreaks.

The Sapotaceae family is also classified as Sapotaceae in the APG classification. There are about 1,300 species in 54 genera distributed mainly in the tropical regions of America, Africa, and Asia. Some species are used for their resin and fruit. There is one genus and two species that grow wild in Japan.

アカテツ科（APG分類：アカテツ科）の常緑高木。樹皮は黒褐色で樹脂を分泌するので、クロテツともいう。葉は互生し、楕円(だえん)形または倒卵形、長さ5～10センチメートルで全縁。厚い革質で裏面に茶褐色の毛が多い。6月に小さい白色花が開き、果実は楕円形で9月に黒紫色に熟し、光沢がある。小笠原(おがさわら)諸島、沖縄、吐噶喇(とから)列島、中国南部からインド、マレーシア、ミクロネシア、ポリネシアにかけての海岸の林内に分布し、防風、防潮用に植える。

　アカテツ科SapotaceaeはAPG分類でもアカテツ科とされる。アメリカ、アフリカ、アジアの熱帯を中心に54属1300種ほどが分布する。樹脂や果実が利用されるものもある。日本には1属2種が自生する。
