Umekawa Chubei - Umegawa Chubei
The name of the main character in a Joruri or Kabuki play, or the common name of the play. The original was Chikamatsu Monzaemon's Meido no Hikiyaku (1711), with the courier Kameya Chubei and the prostitute Umekawa of Shinmachi Tsuchiya as the main characters, but the "Shinkuchimura scene" skillfully depicts the love between husband and wife, parents and children, and between a daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law, and contains many dance-like elements, so it was later made into a michiyuki joruri play. 浄瑠璃,歌舞伎作品中の主人公名または作品の俗称。飛脚屋亀屋忠兵衛と新町槌屋の遊女梅川を主人公にした近松門左衛門作《冥途の飛脚(めいどのひきやく)》(1711)が原典であるが,〈新口村の場〉は夫婦,親子,嫁しゅうとの愛情が巧みに描かれ,舞踊的要素が多いのでのちに道行浄瑠璃に作られた。常磐津《道行情(みちゆきなさけ)の三度笠》(1841),富本《道行恋飛脚》(1780),清元《道行故郷の陽雨(はるさめ)》はその代表曲である。
