Starfish - Starfish

Japanese: ヤツデヒトデ - やつでひとで
Starfish - Starfish

A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Asteroidea, family Asteroidae. A starfish with eight thin, tough arms that can be found on rocks or under stones on the shoreline. The arms are prone to falling off at the base and regenerating, so the number and length are irregular, with some having five to ten. The surface of the arms has many short, thorn-like protrusions, giving it a rough feel. The arms are about 5 to 6 centimeters long. Pale blue spots are irregularly mixed in on a black-brown background. There are two anuses and two to four porous plates. There are suckers at the tips of the tube feet, allowing them to climb up rocks. They are often parasitized by a type of crustacean called a larva, which is shaped like an internal organ, inside their bodies. They spawn in the summer. They can also divide their body into two to multiply. They are found in shallow waters south of central Honshu, the Indian Ocean, and the Western Pacific Ocean.
