A city in the western part of Kumamoto Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. It occupies the southern half of the Yatsushiro Plain and the mountainous area in the southeast, facing the Yatsushiro Sea. The central city developed as a castle town along the Kuma River. Since the mid-Meiji period, industrialization has progressed rapidly, with large factories for cement, chemical fibers, brewing, etc., and the port has been expanded several times, and in 1964 it was designated a new industrial city. In recent years, the coastal industrial complex around Yatsushiro Port has been the center of industries such as paper, aluminum fittings, beverages, and food. Agriculture is thriving, with the largest production of rush grass in Japan, as well as vegetable and fruit cultivation. Kuruma shrimp and flounder are also cultivated. Rush grass crafts are a specialty. The Kyushu Expressway runs through the city, and it is a key location for land and sea transportation, as it is the junction of the Kyushu Shinkansen, Kagoshima Main Line, Hisatsu Line, and Hisatsu Orange Railway. There are the Yatsushiro Castle Ruins Park, Matsuhamaken, famous for its Higo iris in the garden, and Hinagu Onsen in the south. In August 2005, the towns of Sendai, Kagami, Sakamoto, Toyo, and Izumi were incorporated into the city. The area is 681.36 km2 . The population is 132,266 (2010). 熊本県西部の市。1940年市制。八代平野南半や南東部の山地を占め,八代海に臨む。中心市街は球磨(くま)川に沿う城下町として発達。明治中期以降急速に工業化が進み,セメント,化繊,醸造などの大工場が立地し,港湾も数次の拡充工事で整備され,1964年新産業都市に指定された。近年は八代港周辺の臨海工業団地を中心に製紙,アルミ建具,飲料・食料品などの工業が行われる。農業は生産量日本一のイグサのほか野菜・果樹栽培が盛ん。クルマエビ,カレイ養殖も行われる。イグサ工芸品を特産。九州自動車道が通じ,九州新幹線・鹿児島本線・肥薩線・肥薩おれんじ鉄道各線の結節点となる海陸交通の要地。八代城跡公園,庭園の肥後ショウブで有名な松浜軒,南部に日奈久温泉がある。2005年8月八代郡千丁町,鏡町,坂本村,東陽村,泉村を編入。681.36km2。13万2266人(2010)。
