1895‐1968
A Jewish composer born in Italy. His talent was noticed from an early age, and after studying with Pizzetti at the Florence Conservatory, he was recognized by Casella and achieved fame at a young age. Until the 1920s, his style was impressionistic, influenced by Ravel and others, but his sharp sensibility is evident in short pieces such as "Pieces from Three Seas" (1916-19). In the 1930s, he fled to the United States, and gained citizenship in 1946. From this period onwards, he began to adopt a neoclassical style, but his work is less highly regarded than his earlier works.

イタリア生れのユダヤ系作曲家。少年時代から才能が注目され，フィレンツェ音楽院でピッツェッティに学んだ後カセラに認められ，若くして名声を得る。1920年代までの作風は，ラベルらの影響を受けた印象主義的なものであったが，《三つの海の小品》(1916‐19)のような小品に鋭い感覚が示されている。30年代にアメリカに亡命，46年市民権を得る。この時期以後新古典主義的作風をとるようになるが，初期に比べると評価は低い。
