1895‐1968 A Jewish composer born in Italy. His talent was noticed from an early age, and after studying with Pizzetti at the Florence Conservatory, he was recognized by Casella and achieved fame at a young age. Until the 1920s, his style was impressionistic, influenced by Ravel and others, but his sharp sensibility is evident in short pieces such as "Pieces from Three Seas" (1916-19). In the 1930s, he fled to the United States, and gained citizenship in 1946. From this period onwards, he began to adopt a neoclassical style, but his work is less highly regarded than his earlier works. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
