A volcanic island in the southwest Pacific Ocean, in the western part of the Solomon Islands. The local name is Nduke. The majority of the inhabitants are of Melanesian descent, and the population was approximately 2,300 (1970). Blessed with forest resources, development has been underway since 1967. During this time, stepped stone terraces were discovered, but it is unclear whether these were used for intensive taro cultivation or as a fortress during inter-tribal wars.
