Novelist and haiku poet. Born in Kanazawa City. Real name Yoshikatsu. Entered Tokyo Senmon Gakko (now Waseda University) in 1900 (Meiji 33). Became a student of Masaoka Shiki while still at school and continued composing haiku. Switched from Kyushu Nippo to Hochi Shimbun. In 1926 (Taisho 15), founded the first edition of Taishu Bungei with Naoki Sanjugo and others. His representative works include the geographical historical reading From Edo to Tokyo, 12 volumes in total (1920-23, 1926, 1941-42), and the full-length novel Taikoki, 12 volumes in total (1925-34), which was based on extensive research into historical documents and supported by evidence from field surveys, and became the foundation stone for later Taikoki works.
