1860‐1934
Italian poet and novelist. After dropping out of the University of Naples, he worked as a journalist. Influenced by Verga, he published short stories that used the local dialect to realistically portray the people of Naples. Many of his poems, which also use the local dialect and have a strong musical quality, are beloved as Neapolitan folk songs. His works include the short story collection The Pipe and the Jug (1893), Neapolitan Short Stories (1914), and a collection of his poems, Poems (1926). He also published Dramas (1920), which are adaptations of poems and novels.

イタリアの詩人，小説家。ナポリ大学を中退後，ジャーナリストとして活躍。ベルガの影響を受けて，ナポリの民衆の姿を，方言を採り入れてリアリスティックに描いた短編小説を発表。同じく方言を用いた音楽性の強い詩作品のなかには，ナポリ民謡として親しまれているものも多い。作品には短編集《パイプと水差し》(1893)，《ナポリ短編小説集》(1914)，詩作品を集めた《詩集》(1926)などがある。詩や小説を改作した《劇作集》(1920)もある。
