Pavia - Pavia (English spelling) Manuel Pavía y Rodríguez de Alburquerque

A Spanish soldier. In 1866, he participated in a coup against the Isabel Belarus regime, but it failed and he went into exile. He returned to Spain after the September Revolution of 1868. During the republic, he held a high-ranking military position and led the suppression of the uprisings of the radical Cantonaristas (separatorists) in the south and the conservative Carlista uprising in the north. He supported the Unified Republican Party in opposition to the Federalists, and assisted President Castelar Emilio Castelar y Ripoll (1832-99). In 1874, when Castelar's government was in crisis, he used force to dissolve the Cortes (parliament) and install Serrano as president in order to prevent the establishment of a radical government. After this, Serrano's dictatorship began, and the republican system essentially collapsed. Even after the restoration of the monarchy, he held the highest military position and was involved in suppressing republican uprisings. He died on January 4, 1895.
