A sect of Monophysite belief that was established in Syria. The church is officially called the Syrian Orthodox Church, but is commonly called the Jacobites after its 6th-century organizer, James Baradaeus. The Syrian Monophysites, who broke away from the Syrian Orthodox Church at the end of the Council of Chalcedon (451), were subject to repeated persecution and had difficulty forming their own church. However, in the mid-6th century, thanks to the efforts of James Baradaeus, they were able to organize the church and expand their influence in the East, competing with the Nestorians. Their liturgical language was Syriac, and their theology was of a high level. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
