Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia (English spelling)

Japanese: アブハジア[自治共和国]（英語表記）Abkhaziya

An autonomous republic (which has recently declared itself a republic, as described below) occupying the northwestern part of the Transcaucasia Republic of Georgia. Under the former Soviet Union, it was the Abkhazian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. It has an area of 8,600 km2, a population of 537,000 (1989), and its capital is Sukhumi. Located at the western end of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, most of the area is mountainous, sloping down towards the Black Sea, with a small amount of plains along the Black Sea coast. Abkhazians (who call themselves Absusians) currently live in this autonomous republic, as well as in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara and Türkiye.

ザカフカスのグルジア共和国内の北西部を占める自治共和国(後述のように近年〈共和国〉を宣言している)。旧ソ連邦の下ではアブハジア自治ソビエト社会主義共和国であった。面積8600km2，人口53万7000(1989)，首都はスフミ。大カフカス山脈の西端に位置するため，大半が黒海に向かって斜面をなす山岳地帯で，わずかに黒海沿岸に平野がある。　アブハジア人(自称アプスア人)は現在この自治共和国のほか，アジャリア自治共和国，トルコ等に居住。
