In 1840, he succeeded the Kondo family, a samurai of the Choshu (Hagi) domain, as the domain's head of Japanese studies, and settled in Hagi. He was highly valued by the domain's lord, Mori Yoshichika, and in 1864 he became an instructor at the domain school, Meirinkan. After the Meiji Restoration, he worked for the Yamaguchi Prefectural Office for a while, but in 1875 he joined the Imperial Household Ministry and was appointed as a literary official. He accompanied Emperor Meiji on his imperial visits to the eastern provinces and the northern region, and wrote the accompanying diaries "Rikuji no Ki" and "Juppu no Sugakomo."
