The Oxford Gazette was first published in 1665 as the Oxford Gazette, when Charles II had fled from London to Oxford to escape the plague. There is some debate as to whether the first official gazette was the Mercurius Aulicus, published in January 1643 at the court of Charles I during the Revolution, or the London Gazette, and there is still no consensus as to which was the first official gazette.
