Seven Haikai Poems

Seven Haikai Poems

In order to clarify the development of Shofu-style haiku, the haiku poet Sakuma Ryukyo (1695-1748) of the mid-Edo period selected and published 12 volumes in 7 parts from Basho-related anthologies: "Fuyu no hi" (one volume, 1684), "Spring no hi" (one volume, 1686), "Arano" (three volumes, 1689), "Hisago" (one volume, 1690), "Sarumino" (two volumes, 1691), "Sumidarawara" (two volumes, 1694), and "Zoku Sarumino" (two volumes, 1698). It appears that this work was already published at the end of the Kyoho era (1716-1736), but it was not until 1774 (An'ei 3) that this work became widely available, when Shishu compiled the two-volume "Haiku Nanbushu" (Seven Collections of Haiku) in small format. It is noteworthy that the circulation of this work led to a Basho revival movement in various regions, which led to the rise of the so-called Chukou Haiku. Regarding the selection of the seven volumes, there were objections, such as that works from the Teimon and Danrin periods should be added, that inappropriate works should be replaced with others, and that the three volumes of "Fuyu no Hi," "Saru Mino," and "Sumitadawara," which were clearly unconventional, were sufficient, and this led to active research on Basho. In the late early modern period, this work was published in various formats, such as half-sized paper, small-sized paper, medium-sized paper, and horizontal paper, and became widely popular among the general public.
