A magnetic anomaly observed in marine magnetic measurements as stripes parallel to the mid-ocean ridge. The most famous one is seen on the west coast of North America. Vine and Matthews (1963) explained this phenomenon as follows: "When the ocean floor rises from the mid-ocean ridge and cools, it remembers the geomagnetic field of that time, and this geomagnetic field repeatedly reverses, forming a stripe pattern of magnetic strength and weakness that is symmetrical about the axis of the ridge." This theory is called the Vine-Matthews theory, and became important evidence for the theory of ocean-floor spreading.

海上磁気測定で中央海嶺(かいれい)に平行に縞状に観測される磁気異常。北米西海岸に見られるものが有名。この現象は，バインとマシューズ（1963年）によって，〈海洋底が中央海嶺から湧き出し冷却する時に当時の地球磁場を記憶し，その地球磁場が反転を繰り返すため海嶺軸に対して左右対称な磁気の強弱の縞模様が形成される〉と説明された。この説はバイン=マシューズ説と呼ばれ，海洋底拡大説の重要な証拠となった。
