633 koro-708 Jacobite theologian known as "Jerome of Syria," Bishop of Edessa (now Urfa, Turkey) (reigned 684-688). In addition to revising and annotating the Syriac translation of the Old Testament, he established the Syriac rite and, as a monk, reformed Jacobite monasteries. A scholar well versed in Greek, he continued Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History until 692, and wrote numerous letters and writings on doctrine and liturgy. His theological work Al-Aqsamiran (Greek title Hexaemeron, meaning "Six Days," or "Creation"), which could be considered a commentary on Genesis, was left unfinished.
