Jacobite theologian known as "Jerome of Syria," Bishop of Edessa (now Urfa, Turkey) (reigned 684-688). In addition to revising and annotating the Syriac translation of the Old Testament, he established the Syriac rite and, as a monk, reformed Jacobite monasteries. A scholar well versed in Greek, he continued Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History until 692, and wrote numerous letters and writings on doctrine and liturgy. His theological work Al-Aqsamiran (Greek title Hexaemeron, meaning "Six Days," or "Creation"), which could be considered a commentary on Genesis, was left unfinished.

〈シリアのヒエロニムス〉と称されるヤコブ派の神学者，エデッサ(現，トルコ領ウルファ)主教(在位684‐688)。シリア語訳旧約聖書の改訂と校注を行ったほか，シリア典礼を確立，修道士としてはヤコブ派修道院の改革を実現した。ギリシア語に通じた学者で，エウセビオスの《教会史》の続きを692年まで書いたほか，教義と典礼に関する多数の書簡，著述がある。《創世記》の注解ともいうべき神学書《アル･アクサミラン》(6日間，すなわち〈天地創造〉の意，ギリシア語題名《ヘクサエメロン》)は未完に終わった。
