De Bello Gallico (The Gallic Wars)

A work by the Roman politician Caesar. A record of the Gallic Wars that Caesar waged as provincial governor from 58 BC to 50 BC. Eight volumes in total. Caesar himself wrote volumes 1 to 7 (up to the decisive battle at Alesia in 52 BC, in which he defeated Vercingetorix), while volume 8 was written by his general Hirtius. By describing the battles in Gaul with an objective and calm writing style, Caesar demonstrates the legitimacy of Rome's wars and clarifies his own position and achievements as a politician and general. It is an important historical source for understanding Gallic society in the 1st century BC. It is both a first-class history book and a masterpiece of Latin literature.

ローマの政治家カエサルの作品。紀元前58年から前50年までの、地方長官としてカエサルが遂行したガリア戦争の記録。全8巻。カエサル自身の筆は第1巻～第7巻（ウェルキンゲトリクスを破る前52年のアレシアの決戦まで）であり、第8巻は彼の部将ヒルティウスの手になる。ガリアでの戦いを客観的で冷静な筆で描くことによりローマの戦争の正当性を示し、政治家、将軍としての自らの立場、功業を明らかにしたもの。前1世紀のガリア人社会を知るための史料として重要。第一級の歴史書であるとともにラテン文学の傑作。
