A small city in Carinthia in southern Austria. Located on the banks of the Drau River, in the center of the Villach Plain. Population 55,000 (1991). A resort town with radium springs, it is a mecca for winter sports. Industries such as building materials, furniture, chemicals, and machinery are located here. In the 10th century, it became part of the German Kingdom, and in the early 11th century, it became part of the Bishopric of Bamberg. In 1240, it was promoted to city status. From the 13th to 16th centuries, it prospered with the rise of Venice and the mining and iron industries in southern Germany. It was sold and incorporated into Austria in 1759.
