Riodinidae (English name)

Japanese: シジミタテハ（英語表記）Riodinidae

A general term for insects of the Lepidoptera family, Lycaenidae. Small to medium-sized butterflies closely related to the Lycaenidae, and similar to the Nymphalidae in some respects. They are distinguished from the Lycaenidae family by the shape of their hind wings and the characteristics of the male's forelimbs. They are common in Central and South America, and many species are known from the Oriental tropics and Africa, but none are found in Japan. Two species are found in Taiwan: Abisara burnii and Dodona eugenes .

鱗翅目シジミタテハ科の昆虫の総称。シジミチョウに近縁の小～中型のチョウで，タテハチョウに似た点もある。シジミチョウ科とは後翅の形状や雄前肢の特徴で区別される。中央・南アメリカに多く，東洋熱帯とアフリカにかなりの種が知られるが，日本にはまったく産しない。台湾にはアリサンシジミタテハ Abisara burniiとシジミタテハ Dodona eugenesの2種を産する。
