A perennial herb of the Saxifragaceae family (illustration) that grows in colonies on damp rock walls along valleys. It is a rare plant that has adapted to the special environment of steep slopes. It is dioecious, and produces long, slender runners whose tips reach the ground to become new seedlings and multiply. The leaves are basal, evergreen, and have long, hairy stalks. The leaf blade is ovate-elliptical, 1.5-9 cm long, 1-5 cm wide, thick and leathery, and usually reddish purple on the underside. In May and June, it produces numerous small white flowers in a cone-shaped inflorescence. It has five white calyx lobes and no petals. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
