Angiosperm wood usually has vessels, but there are exceptions, such as ferns and gymnosperms, which only have tracheids. All species of the Schisandrae family, including this species, only have tracheids, so they are considered primitive. In contrast to the Magnoliaceae, which are distributed in the Northern Hemisphere, this species has a Southern Hemisphere distribution, and is found in Oceania, southern Southeast Asia, South America, and Madagascar.
