Yagisawa Dam

Japanese:
Yagisawa Dam

This dam is located in the innermost part of the Tone River in Tone District, Gunma Prefecture, north of the confluence with the Yagisawa River. It is about 32 km from Minakami Station on the JR Joetsu Line, and 856 m above sea level. The surrounding area is a primeval beech forest. As part of the Tone River Comprehensive Development Project, the Water Resources Development Public Corporation (now the Water Resources Agency) took 8 years and 4 months to complete the construction in 1967. It is a multipurpose dam for flood control, irrigation, power generation, and water supply. The dam is a concrete arch dam, 352 meters long and 131 meters high. It is one of the largest arch dams in Japan. This submerged the Tone River and its tributary, Narasawa Valley, in a V-shape, creating the huge Okutone Lake, with a circumference of 42.5 km, an area of 5.67 square km, and a storage capacity of 203 million cubic meters. The dam was built to irrigate the Gunma Canal at the foot of the Akagi and Haruna volcanoes, to generate electricity for the Yagisawa Power Station, which has a maximum output of 240,000 kilowatts, and to supply drinking water to the Tokyo Metropolitan area. The construction of this dam has completely changed the landscape of the upper reaches of the Tone River.
