Capricornus (the Goat)

Japanese: やぎ座(山羊座) - やぎざ（英語表記）Capricornus

Its abbreviation is Cap. It is one of the zodiacal constellations. A large area of the sky is covered with faint stars of second magnitude or less that make up the main part of the constellation in an inverted triangle. It is said that the goat-horned and beard-wearing shepherd Pan was attacked by the monster Typhon on the banks of a river, and when he fled into the river, only the lower half of his body transformed into a fish. The Tropic of Capricorn is called the tropic of Capricorn because in Babylonian times, this constellation was where the winter solstice was located (now in Sagittarius). Its approximate position is 20h50m in right ascension and -20° in declination.

略号はCap。黄道星座の一つ。大きな天域に2等以下の暗い星が逆三角形の星座の主体をつくる。ヤギの角とあごひげをもった牧羊神パンが川のほとりで怪物テュフォンに襲われ，川の中に逃げこむときに，下半身のみが魚に化身した姿であるという。南回帰線のことをやぎ座の回帰線tropic of Capricornというのは，バビロニア時代にはこの星座に冬至点があった(現在はいて座)ことによる。概略位置は赤経20h50m，赤緯－20゜。
