A village in Gujo County in northwestern Gifu Prefecture. Population 3,475 (1995). A mountain village in the upper reaches of the Nagara River, with a small lowland along the coast and steep mountain ranges including Washigatake (1,672m) and Dainichigatake (1,709m). Hirugano in the north forms the watershed between the Pacific Ocean side (Nagara River) and the Sea of Japan side (Sho River). After World War II, pioneer groups settled on the Hirugano Plateau and successfully developed it, with vegetable cultivation and dairy farming taking advantage of the highland climate, which have become the village's main industries.
