Date of birth and death unknown. A scholarly monk from India. His Sanskrit name is Kātyāyanīputra, and is also transliterated as Katayenna or Kasennen. He is said to have lived in the 2nd century B.C., but this date is estimated from articles in the Ibushurinron, Sanron Xiangi, and Daitō Saiikiki, and is thought to have actually lived a little later. He wrote Abhidharma's Treatise on the Development of Wisdom and formed the main doctrinal system of the Sarvastivada school, the most influential sect of Indian Buddhism. According to Daitō Saiikiki, he wrote this book in the country of Cinabhukti in northern India.
