Minas Gerais (State)

A landlocked state in southeastern Brazil. Its capital is Belo Horizonte. Its area is 583,248 km2, the fifth largest in the country, accounting for 6.85% of the national land area. Its population was 16,505,300 (1995), the second largest in the country, accounting for 10.6% of the total population. It is located on the Brazilian Plateau, which was formed by erosion of an ancient plateau, and has an average elevation of 800 m. The highest point is Mount Bandeira (2,890 m), which is on the border with the state of Espírito Santo. Due to its location halfway between the north and south, and the most rugged topography in the country, the state enjoys a wide variety of climatic conditions.

ブラジル南東部の内陸州。州都ベロ･オリゾンテ。面積は全国5位の58万3248km2で，全国土の6.85％を占める。人口は1650万5300(1995)，全国2位で，全人口の10.6％に相当する。古い高原が浸食を受けてできたいわゆるブラジル高原上にあり，平均標高800mである。最高点はエスピリト･サント州との境界にあるバンデイラ山(2890m)である。国内で最も起伏に富む地形と，南部と北部の中間にある位置のため，多様な気候条件に恵まれている。
