A landlocked state in southeastern Brazil. Its capital is Belo Horizonte. Its area is 583,248 km2, the fifth largest in the country, accounting for 6.85% of the national land area. Its population was 16,505,300 (1995), the second largest in the country, accounting for 10.6% of the total population. It is located on the Brazilian Plateau, which was formed by erosion of an ancient plateau, and has an average elevation of 800 m. The highest point is Mount Bandeira (2,890 m), which is on the border with the state of Espírito Santo. Due to its location halfway between the north and south, and the most rugged topography in the country, the state enjoys a wide variety of climatic conditions.
