Radio communication conducted for personal interest, without financial gain. Amateur radio operators are commonly called hams, and only those who have taken a specific training course or passed a national exam and received a license from the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications can operate as amateur radio operators. In Japan there is the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL), and in the United States there is the American Radio Relay League (ARRL).
