A walking shrimp of the Scylla-lobster family of Crustacea (illustration). It is about 15 cm long, with large individuals reaching 20 cm. Like spiny lobsters, it inhabits rocky reefs at depths of 10 to 30 m, and is often found in places directly exposed to open ocean water. Its meat is edible and tasty, but not so abundant that it is sold on the market. The carapace is extremely hard and covered with small granules and coarse hairs. Overall, it is flat dorsally and ventrally, but the center of both the cephalothorax and abdomen are slightly raised. There are eight spines in a row along the side edge of the cephalothorax, and there is a deep notch between the second and third spines.
