A pine grove on the Miho Peninsula in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. A scenic spot in Suruga that is also mentioned in the Manyoshu, it has been famous since ancient times for its white sand, green pines, and views of Mt. Fuji. The Miho Peninsula, which juts out into Suruga Bay, is a sand spit created by coastal currents carrying sand and gravel created by marine erosion of Mt. Udo. It embraces Shimizu Port on its inside, and its tip curves northward and splits into three hook-shaped branches: Masaki, the entrance to the port, and Cape Kaijima and Cape Tsukamabenten, which jut out into Shimizu Port, giving it the shape of a branching sand spit. The three capes gave rise to the names "Miho" or "Miho," which later became "Miho." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
