Monpe

A type of mountain hakama. Also called "monpei," its form varies depending on the region. This word is not as old as "tattsuke" or "karusan." In any case, it was work wear in rural areas, and was an indispensable part of clothing. In particular, it was adopted as emergency clothing for women during World War II, and spread throughout the country. With the end of the war, its use was limited to rural areas, but in modern times it is being replaced by trousers.

山袴(やまばかま)の一種。「もんぺい」ともいわれ、その形態は地方によって異なる。このことばは裁着(たっつけ)、かるさんのように、古いことばではない。いずれにせよ農山村の労働着であり、とくに服飾構成では欠くことのできないものである。ことに第二次世界大戦中は女子の非常時服として採用され、全国的に普及した。戦争の終結とともにその使用は農山村に限られて用いられたが、現代ではそれもズボンにかわりつつある。
