Italian missionary. English name John. Born in Monte Corvino, he belonged to the Franciscan Order. He traveled by sea from Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, landed in Quanzhou, China, and entered the Yuan capital of Kambalik (Beijing) in 1294. He presented a letter from Pope Nicholas IV to Temur (Chengzong of the Yuan Dynasty) and received permission to stay in the capital and engage in missionary work. He left two letters as reports before his death there. He built two churches in the capital, and the number of converts reached 10,000. [Katsuto Takeshi]

イタリア人宣教師。英語名ジョン。モンテ･コルビノの出身，フランシスコ会所属。ペルシア湾のホルムズから海路を経て，中国の泉州に上陸，1294年元の都カンバリク(北京)に入った。ローマ教皇ニコラウス4世の書簡をテムル(元の成宗)に呈し，首都に滞在して布教活動に従事する許可を得た。現地で死亡するまでに2通の手紙を報告書として残している。首都に二つの教会を建て，改宗者は1万人に達した。【勝藤猛】
