1899‐1982 A Polish mathematician born in Krakow, he obtained his doctorate from the University of Berlin in 1921, and was a lecturer at the University of Munich from 1927 to 1933. He began working at Princeton University in the United States in 1933, became a naturalized American in 1938, and became a professor at the same university in 1946. His first achievement was in Fourier analysis, where he gave the characteristics of the function f ( x ) expressed as in terms of the function α( x ) that is monotonically increasing and bounded in (-∞, ∞), and called it a positive definite function (1933).
