The construction office of the Edo Shogunate, Sakujikata, placed stonemasons under the chief carpenter along with blacksmiths and metalworkers, and the leader of these was called the stonemason master carpenter, and was responsible for the creation of building foundations, stones for hearths, and kotatsu.
