Died April 18, 1898. French painter in Paris. Studied under F. Picot in 1846 and T. Chassériau in 1848. Travelled to Italy from 1857 to 1859 and studied the works of V. Carpaccio, A. Major works include Oedipus and the Sphinx (1864, Metropolitan Museum of Art), Salome Dancing before King Herod (1876, Moreau Museum), and the large-scale Apparitions (1876).
