Stegolophodon (English spelling)

Japanese: ステゴロフォドン（英語表記）Stegolophodon

A small fossil elephant of the Pentalophodontidae family in the Proboscidea order. It has long jaws and diphyodont teeth. It has low-crowned molars with horizontally arranged nodular cusps, and some molars have a central ridge in the valley of the molar surface. It is found in the Pliocene and Pleistocene strata of Eurasia and Africa. It is considered to be the ancestor of Stegodon, and Matsumoto Hikoshichiro gave it the genus Prostegodon in 1924, but it was later lumped together with Stegolophodon, which has priority. The oldest species of this genus were found in Japan, including Stegolophodon pseudolatidens and S. tsuda.

長鼻目ペンタロフォドン科の一属の小型化石ゾウ。長顎。二生歯性。瘤状咬頭が横に並ぶ低歯冠の臼歯で，臼歯面の谷に中央峰のみられるものがある。ユーラシア，アフリカの新第三紀鮮新世，第四紀更新世の地層に分布。ステゴドンの祖先型とされ，松本彦七郎は 1924年 Prostegodon という属名を与えたが，先取権のあるステゴロフォドンにまとめられた。この類では，シュードラチデンスゾウ Stegolophodon pseudolatidens やツダゾウ S.tsuda など，日本で最古種が産出した。
