The image displayed on a computer display is the document that is printed as is. This is an abbreviation for "What you see is what you get." This has been made possible by improvements in display resolution and computer processing power. It can also be thought of as a kind of man-machine interface concept, in which the document is the result of editing the screen displayed on the display. This function allows the operator of office equipment to accurately grasp the image that will appear when printed, making work easier. On personal computers, this function was first realized by software for Apple's Macintosh, and was then made possible by Microsoft Windows.

コンピュータのディスプレイに表示されているイメージが，そのまま出力される文書であるということ。"What you see is what you get."の略。ディスプレイの解像度やコンピュータの処理能力の向上などにより実現した。ディスプレイで表示される画面を編集した結果がそのまま文書であるという，一種のマン・マシン・インターフェース概念であるということもできる。この機能によって，OA機器操作者は印刷されたときのイメージを正確に把握することができ，作業が容易になる。パーソナル・コンピュータではアップルのマッキントッシュ用のソフトウェアがこの機能を最初に実現，次いでマイクロソフトのウィンドウズでも可能となった。
